Living off the Land (LOLBins)
Conducting an attack using tools already present and trusted on the target -- PowerShell, WMI, certutil, rundll32, regsvr32, mshta, bitsadmin, scheduled tasks -- rather than deploying custom malware. Because the binaries are signed by the operating system vendor and routinely used administratively, they evade allow-listing and signature detection. LOLBins are examined in GCIH, GCFA, CySA+, SC-200 and detection-engineering domains.
Why It Matters
In practice this is why detection engineering shifted from file-based to behaviour-based signals: the executable is legitimate and signed, so the only distinguishing information is the command line, the parent-child relationship and the context. A rule keyed on process name is worthless here, whereas certutil invoked with a URL, or an Office process spawning a script interpreter, is high-signal. That makes command-line logging non-negotiable -- Windows 4688 with command line enabled, or Sysmon event 1 -- because without arguments the telemetry cannot distinguish an attack from routine administration. Renamed LOLBins are a common evasion, which is exactly why detections should match the PE's OriginalFileName rather than the on-disk filename. PowerShell deserves specific attention through script-block logging, constrained language mode and Just Enough Administration. The general lesson is that allow-listing an operating system binary allow-lists everything it can be told to do. On exams, expect questions on why signature detection fails and which telemetry is required.
