Volt Typhoon
Also known as: BRONZE SILHOUETTE, Vanguard Panda, Voltzite, DEV-0391, Insidious Taurus
US agencies assess that Volt Typhoon is pre-positioning inside critical infrastructure IT networks so it could disrupt or destroy services in a future crisis, which they note is not consistent with ordinary espionage. The group is known for stealth: it uses built-in administration tools (living off the land), valid accounts and compromised home and small-office routers to hide its traffic.

Defences that work against this actor
- Patch edge devices first and replace end-of-life routers, firewalls and VPNs that no longer get fixes.
- Enable command-line and PowerShell logging and baseline normal admin tool use, so living-off-the-land activity stands out.
- Alert on attempts to copy NTDS.dit (ntdsutil, volume shadow copies on domain controllers).
- Keep logs centrally for long enough to investigate multi-year intrusions.
- Segment OT from IT and require MFA for all remote access.
